Hello,

My Name Is Mr Osram Slam. I Am Interested In Buying Your Item. And I Will Like To Know The Condition Of The Item With The Asking Price Including The Pics. I Will Be looking forward to hear from you

Sorry Mr. Slam, we’ve reported you as a scam. Thanks to a rapidly sent e-mail by a chiropractor receiving the above message in reply to an item he was selling in the chiropractic classifieds, we picked up an IP address and some other information. According to the reply form, Mr. Slam had a Sender IP of 76.230.215.65. That turned out to be a IP address in the United States, something we don’t commonly see with these sorts of scams.

The IP address comes from AT&T Internet services in Richardson Texas. An e-mail was sent to the abuse department. Hopefully they will take a look into it.

For those of you running for more classified websites, you may want to add the above IP address to your black lists. Here’s just a sampling of rapidfire replies that were recently sent to everybody selling products online…

While I was preparing to leave for the office this afternoon I received a phone call from a chiropractor that is new to practicing in California. Dr. Glenn Larsen of Lifetime Health Chiropractic Center in Santa Barbara, California called me thanks to a referral from Dr. Anita Morgenstern in New York.

Dr. Glenn called seeking chiropractors in the Santa Barbara area that he could fellowship with and I’m hoping we come across other chiropractors in the Southern California area that welcome Glenn into their circle. I’m hoping Dr. Glenn doesn’t have to create a circle of his own, but sometimes that’s just about what it takes to get the ball rolling.

I told Dr. Glenn about DCS meetings in Orange County and told him lots of local docs (in California) go to Schofield Chiropractic Training and that many bonding relationships in West Coast chiropractic have formed as a result of those trips to Arizona. It was a bit unfortunate that just yesterday I was making travel arrangements to attend a focus philosophy event in Pennsylvania when we used to host those events in Orange County. It has been a long time since those days, and I was reminded of the Los Angeles Chiropractic Philosophy Society, and the regular get-togethers we used to have when I was a chiropractic student at Cleveland Chiropractic in Los Angeles.

Hard drives and archives are amazing, while I haven’t managed to save everything over the years (data rot and damaged hard drives), I continue to find images and documents from the 1990s (my beginnings in chiropractic). Turns out the LA Chiropractic Philosophy Society held an inaugural meeting on June 5, 1999, a Saturday.

Do any chiropractors in the Los Angeles area remember whose office the inaugural meeting was held in? I remember chiropractors Jeff Ptak and Glenn Fischel (sorry about letting your kid smoke that cigar Glenn) were pretty active in this society, so was Dr. Luke Cohen (at that time a chiropractic student), as were other local LA chiropractors and students.

10 Years later and I still have a scan of the original document used for that first chiropractic meeting. Does anybody remember the ones that were taking place prior put on by Dr. Jeffrey Danielsen? He was a Cleveland Chiropractic College graduate, I believe in 1995.

Look at that handsome gentleman in the middle of the photo above. No, not Patrick Gentempo, the other handsome gentleman (who was not yet a chiropractor). According to my drive, this photograph was scanned and saved digitally on September 26, 1997 (I’m a pack rat of chiropractic media). Looks about right to me since that’s Dr. Luke Cohen on the far right, and he was still a student in Los Angeles at that time as well.

Simply Chiropractic, an image that was on my hard drive from around July 26 of 1998. The original is a 640×480 Tiff file. Remember when nearly everything was 640 pixels by 480 pixels? I had to locate a program that I could open up this tiff file with so I could convert it to JPEG and post here. Times have changed. So many chiropractic related designs created in the late 1990s, and while some of them are not the greatest quality, I think I’ll be posting them anyway for historical purposes.

If anything, Dr. Glenn reminded me today of the importance of chiropractic fellowship in the community, who have we got if we don’t have each other?

I received news today that the 2010 Dead Chiropractic Society California Jam in Orange County is a go-ahead. All I’ve received so far is a PDF flyer, but it looks like the best rock ‘n roll cover design for a chiropractic event I’ve ever seen. Great list of speakers too.

This will be the third annual DCS California Jam going on in Southern California. Dates are set for March 12 and March 13, 2010. At this time CE relicensing is pending. Looks like an incredible lineup of speakers, with my favorite Dr. Fred Schofield, one of my other favorites Dr. Fabrizio Mancini, and lots of others.

It is billed as the world’s largest chiropractic party, DCS does not disappoint, mark you calendar early and plan to be there in March.

This 3 Amigos in chiropractic post is from DCS number two, so is this chiropractors having fun and loving life post, as is this Orange County to San Fernando Valley post. There is now dozens of DCS related articles on planet chiropractic, you can browse nearly all of them by searching DCS on planetchiropractic.com.

Taking a walk down history lane on what parts of the planetchiropractic.com website looked like 10 years ago. Amazing to think that we’ve been at it for more than a decade now, and today even our news archives feature a full 10 years of solid content that has been posted near daily since June of 1999.

Chances are you don’t recall how things looked on our chiropractic of planets back in the 1990s. I had an affirmation in 1999 that I’ve repeated each day. The affirmation was Fresh Content Daily. That was the simple goal set out from around the time of December 1998. The goal was to create some form of fresh html based content on a daily occurrence. If I didn’t spend 1994 through 1998 playing Doom and Duke Nukem 3-D there probably would have been even more content. I pretty much stopped playing computer games around the time I put my focus on the website. It was a worthwhile sacrifice.

That’s what a screenshot from the news archives look like in 1999. At least the ones that were posted by me (Dr. Mike). Back then, articles simply had a title, the author name, and the time of the post, as well as a date for each group of articles posted that day. I like the one that reads “Internet will change doctor-patient relationships” knowing it has become a reality in 2009.

It’s 10 years later and many healthcare professionals still believe ADHD maybe overdiagnosed in children. There is also still quite a few concerns regarding ADHD medication safety. Look at the headlines from August 22 and ask yourself if drug-resistant staph bacteria is still on the rise. One only has to perform a Google News search for the term to see that 10 years later it still appears in quite a few news headlines. It is not as popular a topic right now, since so many are focused on Swine Flu a.k.a. the H1N1 virus.

10 years later do you think drug manufacturers still continue to seek pushing chemicals on the market without valid scientific evidence supporting their product? Today, both homeopathic and drug company manufactured products are under the gun when it comes to searching news related to pharmaceutical fraud.

Searching in 1999 — If you landed on our website in 1999, you had a whopping six choices for searching the Internet from our site. There is a screenshot below that shows a drop down box on our home page allowing people to search across six different engines. Those sites included Alta Vista, Excite, Goto, Infoseek, Lycos and Yahoo. I think about that time in 1998-1999, Alta Vista was our number one source of search traffic. How times have changed.

Of those six engines shown above, only Yahoo remains as a popular search destination. 10 years later we have Google dominating search along with Microsoft Bing challenging the behemoth engine for a slice of the search engine pie.

The above two screenshots show white pages with black text combined with shades of blue. Around late 1999 we went all black for about a six month period. Anybody remember what the site looked like then? I had even forgotten about much of the design created in the 1990s, but just yesterday I came across an about page which says a bit about what we had set out to do.

I really like this… “Planet Chiropractic was launched with the intent of connecting more chiropractors with their colleagues and to increase awareness and involvement in the worldwide chiropractic community.”

At the bottom of the about page I found a personal message that looked as though it was my signature on pages for people visiting the website. There’s something to learn from dedicating years of your life to service in an endeavor that you’re passionate about.

10 years later one message I have for you still rings true…

May your days be abundant and your lives filled with passion.

Branded as a “decision engine”, Microsoft’s new Bing.com is seeking to grab market share from Google, in the battle of search engines. To see how the two matched up I performed the same search on each site. Here’s what I discovered.

About an hour after game 2 of the NBA finals, I grabbed screenshots from both Bing.com news search and Google News search. I wanted to see how the two engines matched up for delivering results related to recent events. To ensure equal results, the same search phrase was used (NBA finals) for each of the search queries. The screen shots were cropped so they would fit here for viewing (even though they’re still kind of big for this blog theme). The first screenshot displays news search results from Bing.

First off I like the richness of the page Bing delivers. The screen shot doesn’t do it justice, as the background image and Bing logo are not shown here. Looking at the screen capture we see there are 124 news results indexed for this particular search phrase. I like that there is an option to sort by relevance versus most recent. In this case I’m searching by default which I suspect is by relevance.

The leading snippet and title tag pretty much sum up the information most people are seeking. We can see that the Lakers took a 2-0 lead in the series, and the score was 101-96 over the Orlando Magic in overtime. The primary image result, featuring Kobe Bryant, is relevant to the topic. Four sources of “news media” are displayed for video results. Microsoft Bing allows users to mouse over the video thumbnails in order to watch a preview. From a user perspective, that’s a nice experience, but from someone wanting traffic to their own website for video results, I don’t feel too good about the preview feature. Anyways, I would assume most visitors performing a search for NBA finals on Bing would be happy with the results. Searchers received relevant content in a mixed form of text images and video.

The Google News engine has been around since early 2002, and it’s made significant advancements (including video and commenting to name two) during the past seven years. According to Google, selection and placement of stories on the page are determined automatically by computer algorithm. The screenshot above shows that algorithm at work when searching the term NBA Finals. How did they do?

When it comes to sheer volume of results, Google News has Microsoft Bing beat, with 1,649 related news articles indexed. Not all of those articles have been published post game time (on either of the two sites) but Google News also delivers relevant information (to the search query) directly in the news titles and snippets. From a user perspective, I can get the game score and information on who won simply by viewing the clustered results.

Which one is better? I can’t say there is a clear winner here. In the case of searching for this particular recent event key phrase, I think both sites do a good job in delivering results. Google gets points for volume of articles and Bing gets points for including relevant video directly in the news results. Both sides appear to be indexing content from major news outlets, at least from what is seen when viewing clustered news results on the search page.

While Microsoft’s Bing is fresh and new, and displays a background image on the search home page, the Google News website recently underwent some updates and modifications, featuring some changes in color, and grouping of news related search results returned. Video inclusion is increasing on Google News pages as well, and video can typically be watched directly from the Google News home page.

With a growing desire from users to find recent event results as fast as possible, I think Microsoft has an opportunity here to step up their game, and show the world they are a serious contender in the category of news search results. Still, it’s my opinion both Microsoft and Google are behind Twitter when it comes to getting really fast results on searches related to current events. Check search.twitter.com to see for yourself.

Change is good. Were facing another summer here at the headquarters for Planet Chiropractic and Chiropractic Blogs, and while there is plenty of activities scheduled, there’s going to be some summertime fun taking place as well. I like taking time off to rest, relax and recharge like anybody, and living at the beach, this is about the week prior before we begin to slow things down and enjoy the sunshine, versus spending time indoors.

The photo is of a “sprite” and was taken at the Arizona Biltmore Hotel in Phoenix, Arizona. It is a peaceful image, and if you get a chance to visit the hotel, I think you’d be really pleased with the hotel grounds and scenery.

So change is coming, but most of what’s going on may not be too noticeable, if you’re visiting Planet Chiropractic for classifieds or chiropractic seminar information. On this blog, there are some changes taking place that involve technical stuff like doing 301 redirects for content being moving to new locations. Hopefully that change goes well and the site doesn’t suffer any hiccups.

If you been following the news, you’ve undoubtedly noticed there’s been a significant increase in content related to marathons and running, during the past several months. Locally, we’re done with marathons in Southern California, as the 2009 rock ‘n roll Marathon in San Diego recently completed, as did the 2009 Los Angeles Marathon (held on Memorial Day). There is a Marathon scheduled in San Francisco for the month of July, and while I won’t make it up to the bay area for that event, chiropractor Scott Swanson is going to assist with news coverage from the San Francisco area. I love when chiropractors volunteer to participate, it makes for a much more rich experience.

I went off on a tangent here. What I meant to get to was to say that there will not be many marathon related articles until the month of September, and they were going to have marathon coverage for about 10 months straight. I mentioned it somewhere, that I felt marathons are a perfect fit for the chiropractic profession. Actually, marathons are good fit for many industries in healthcare, since there’s so many different levels involved . When training for marathons and participating in long-distance running activities. I’m glad we’re moving more the direction of increased marathon coverage, and I’m even more happy for the relationships we’ve developed with cities putting on marathons, and professional elite long-distance runners.

Marathons won’t be the only sport getting attention. There’s going to be increased coverage for this year’s U.S. Open golf tournament, of the 2009 Tour de France, and some other sporting events occurring during the 2009 summer season. I won’t be handling coverage of most of these events, but we’ve made some arrangements with photographers in the field, as well as sports & fitness writers, to provide us with fresh content related to these events. The reality is every professional sport I know of involved chiropractors providing care for athletes. Publications in the industry like to cover the big stories, but we sometimes miss out on other stories taking place behind the scenes. With the increased transparency and socialization taking place on the Internet, we have very interestingly been increasingly in contact with amateur and professional athletes from all sorts of sport. Many want to share their stories. I’m looking forward to seeing those stories appear online.

There’s going to be more chiropractic content showing up on the blog pages, and I suspect there’s going to be more consumer oriented content appearing on the news pages. In our 10th year of delivering chiropractic news online, I think it’s important we move forward with change that better serves our mission of delivering chiropractic minded content worldwide.

Most importantly, have yourself a spectacular summer!

The third leg of the 2009 Triple Crown is upon us, with the Belmont Stakes taking place on Saturday, in Elmont New York. When reporting on the May 16 Preakness Stakes I mentioned how growing up as a kid, my parents used to take us to Belmont Park, for weekend horse races. The 2009 Kentucky Derby was only the second sporting event I watched on TV so far this year (I also watched Super Bowl 43), followed by watching the 2009 Pimlico Preakness Stakes. I don’t watch a lot of television (that may seem kind of obvious). I do love sports though and I’ll be checking out the Belmont Stakes via ABC HD television.

I had the chance to get in touch with Sacramento chiropractor, Dr. Jeri Anderson, who’s an expert on competitive horseracing. While everybody’s been talking about Mine That Bird and his amazing upset at the 2009 Kentucky Derby, I’ve been wondering how champion jockeys like Calvin Borel manage being on a horse, traveling at such a fast speed. I figured it’s got to be incredibly tough on the body.

I asked Dr. Anderson (besides being a chiropractor, she has a long history in competitive horse riding) what it’s like being on a horse in a situation like the Kentucky Derby or Belmont Stakes.

Here’s what she had to say…

The power of a horse accelerating out of the gate is explosive! However, the jockey is already concentrating on placement of their horse in the pack. Like a human runner, every horse has its own unique pace in a race. Some are better leading the whole way, and some have a finishing burst at the end. Besides monitoring the pace, the jockey has to always look for a path through the pack so that their mount does not get boxed in on the rail, or expends too much energy running on the outside of the pack (which causes a longer trajectory to the finish).

Jockeys do not have much of their leg wrapping around the barrel of the horse in comparison to traditional riding styles like western or even hunter/jumper. Therefore, jockeys must have incredible balance (proprioceptive sense) and leg and core strength. Jockeys have one of the most dangerous jobs on earth, with many suffering spinal fractures, spinal cord injuries and/or head injuries during their careers (often ending their careers), even at the most elite levels of talent and experience.

One of the ways that a jockey communicates effectively with their horse is through their hands. They must possess a good feel in their hands to communicate with the horse without impeding the horse’s forward motion. Great jockeys become one with the horse. Looking at them in the distance, it just looks like one being moving, not a separate horse and rider. Great jockeys are fluid and move with the horse without impeding the horse’s effort. They can conserve the horses energy without fighting with it and unleash that energy at the perfect moment. Riding at that level is very exhilarating!

By the way, great horses are competitive and know and love their jobs. They have their unique personalities and quirks. Trainers and exercise riders communicate the horses unique traits and needs to the jockeys!

On the topic of New York’s Belmont Stakes, Dr. Jeri reminded me that most jockeys and riders functioning at elite levels in equestrian sports are receiving chiropractic care. She emphasized that their careers depend on it. She also reminded me that many of the race horses are adjusted as well (watch a chiropractic for horses video here).

For those of you watching on Saturday, the Belmont Stakes Post Time is set for around 6:27 PM Eastern time. It is a million-dollar horse race, featuring three-year-olds on a 1 1/2 mile dirt track. Belmont Stakes TV Coverage is provided by ESPN from noon until 5 PM (Eastern time) and the Belmont Stakes will be broadcast on ABC ( with live coverage from 5 PM to 7 PM).

This link to some 2009 Preakness coverage includes a video replay of the 2009 Kentucky Derby, where 50 to 1 long shot Mine That Bird, pulled off a monumental upset. The above photo (featuring horse Mine That Bird) initially appeared in this Pimlico Preakness Stakes article. Filly Rachel Alexandra won that race.

Many thank you’s to the folks at the official Los Angeles Marathon website for having Planet Chiropractic at the 2009 LA Marathon as part of event media coverage. Our coverage of the LA Marathon began last week, with news on preparations for the event, and concerns about potential heat in Los Angeles. The weather turned out to be spectacular for running a marathon, as morning temperatures hovered around the low 60s Fahrenheit, something event organizers and runners were all happy about.

On Saturday, Planet Chiropractic had news on 6 elite runners and their thoughts on running the 2009 LA Marathon. 26-year-old, Tatyana Petrova, of Russia, said she would run fast and she meant it. Tatyana won the women’s division with a time of 2:25:56. More on that and news of 24th LA Marathon winner Wesley Korir was covered in the LA Marathon 2009 Results and Photos post.

Since the race ended I’ve uploaded nearly 100 photographs to an LA Marathon photo set on Flickr. Below are some of my favorites from today’s Los Angeles race.

Shown here seconds before crossing the finish line. Tariku was second place in the men’s division. He was one of the fastest runners in the field, having finished the 2008 Hamburg Marathon with a time of 2:08:10.

If you have been reading Planet Chiropractic news the past few months you may be wondering what’s been going on with all the marathon related content. Actually, we’ve had marathon related content for about four years now, but there’s really been plenty of marathons taking place in the past few months.

I love to run. Most people who know me know that I like to get out on the beach and run as a way to keep physically fit and mentally fit. I had been reminding myself that I’ve got to summarize some of the marathon related content that’s been appearing in the news, and then I noticed we did that in April with the 26 Mile Plus Sunday Running Marathons post.

Even though that was posted in late April, I noticed 10 marathon or running related articles appearing in news since. These marathons and running events have passed, so this is more of an additional summary archive for 2009 marathon events.

I’m excited about the Los Angeles Marathon coming up this Memorial Day weekend. I’m really excited that there’s going to be a two-day Expo, because I’m seeking out a few pairs of new running shoes. I’ve always found there are great deals on running shoes at marathon Expos. News regarding the LA Marathon Heating up posted today, and will have some news from the event. The run this year is on Memorial Day, which is a Monday, beginning in downtown Los Angeles.

The San Francisco Bay to Breakers 2009 12 K was a huge success. From what I heard via twitter, e-mail, and talking to some folks who participated, there was lots of fun to be had. Besides our mini guide for the 2009 Bay to Breakers event, we published a San Fransisco 2009 Bay to Breakers Results and Photos article Sunday afternoon. It was a great run for taking photos and I may have to personally make the trip to San Francisco for the 2010 Bay to Breakers race so I can get some shots of my own.

The California Pasadena marathon really showed how twitter was bringing marathon action online, and we saw lots of social media action for the 2009 Boston Marathon as well. One thing that was great about the Boston Marathon, was the constant live coverage viewable over the web, and a constant stream of people tweeting information from the race. It was really easy to keep up on race day details and festivities. The 2009 Boston Marathon Results and Photos have a great summary of the race.

The live online coverage for the Boston Marathon was provided by Universal Sports, who also provided live 2009 London Marathon Video. They’ll be providing a live online feed for the Los Angeles 2009 marathon as well. The 2009 Country Music Marathon (also known as the Nashville Marathon) had good live online video as well. For that marathon, video was only at the finish line, but it was neat to watch runners cross the line throughout the morning.

There was a marathon in Orange County Newport Beach and a marathon in Cincinnati (Flying Pig Marathon Cincinnati & OC Marathon Newport Beach) on May 3, 2009. It was a big day for marathons across the United States, and there were some races we didn’t get a chance to have news coverage on. The Green Bay Marathon took place this past weekend, and from what I hear the event went real well. It was their 10th year anniversary for a marathon that has a start and finish at Lambeau Field.

I found two archived articles related to the Los Angeles marathons, one for March 13, 2006 (Los Angeles Marathon & Chiropractic), and the other from later that week, March 2006 Marathon. I’ve heard so many stories of chiropractors running marathons that I’m almost surprised there’s not any major Marathon sponsored by chiropractic groups in the United States. Running is an event that it appears many chiropractors enjoy. I may be biased being a runner, and I realize there’s lots of chiropractors equally into cycling and swimming. Those chiropractors who are athletically talented in all three areas, in training for triathlons, are impressive. Especially so, since nearly all the more maintaining active chiropractic practices while managing rigorous training schedules.

The 2009 San Diego Marathon (Rock ‘n Roll Marathon) is still to come (that’s going to be in the end of May) and the San Francisco Marathon is scheduled for July 26, 2009. Also watch out for the Los Angeles triathlon in October, which begins right by my house in Venice Beach. Looking forward to cheering on athletes at that event.

Chiropractic is a great fit for marathons and triathlons (both in practice and as a client), at least that’s been my experience.

Planet Chiropractic added two chiropractic related domains yesterday, to a list of acquisitions made over the course of the past few months. The first was a chiropractic website for chiropractor Brandon Takahashi of Takahashi Chiropractic in West Los Angeles. I had built a chiropractic website for him back in 2001, which featured information for his then Malibu office and chiropractic office in West LA. Like I’ve seen lots of other chiropractors do, Dr. Takahashi didn’t renew his domain, and it was deleted from the registry as a result.

This is something I see chiropractors do far too often, and I admit I’ve had some domains I’ve lost on my own, because I’ve forgotten where the information was, or I registered the domain using my old chiropractic office address in downtown Los Angeles. Don’t let this happen to you, keep your domain information in one place (that goes for me as well) and if you only have a handful of domains, consider registering them for 5 to 10 years in advance. That way you greatly decrease the odds that it’s going to expire.

What some people don’t realize is that when a domain expires, the website hosted basically disappears. It may still be available via an IP address FTP account, but it won’t be viewable on the World Wide Web. I found a copy of Dr. Takahashi’s site archived online, and apparently someone else had as well.

After the domain had expired another individual picked up the domain (you have probably seen this many times) and put different information on it. We recently contacted the individual and convinced them to transfer the domain to Planet Chiropractic, since it was us who had created the original website template (it had been re-uploaded and was back in use, along with our copyright information).

Keep an eye on your domain ownership - that’s the lesson here.

The other case is a domain that was very similar to chiropracticblogs.com (which forwards here). The domain was collecting some of the content being created and posted on planet chiropractic news. My concern was that the domain and the content it was displaying may be creating duplicate content issues that could have been creating negatively affecting search engine rankings for our content. I’ve dealt with scrapers before, in all sorts of different ways, but this one turned out to be quite easy.

The domain was owned by a non-chiropractor who was a self-proclaimed fan of chiropractic care. They weren’t running any advertising on the site, but they were pulling quite a bit of content from our site (without written permission), and reproducing it as their own. After a few phone calls and some discussion we convinced the domain owner to shut the site down and give us access so we could initiate a 301 redirect. That makes for a much better user experience and less confusion for those seeking information related to Planet Chiropractic on the Web.

Lesson here was that a few phone calls and being polite can often times payoff in resolving simple misunderstandings. Moving forward!
