Continuing Education Was Available for Numerous States

Fresh off of posting photos from an Internet Marketing conference in Los Angeles, I changed gears and made my way down the coast to the Paradise Point Resort and Spa in San Diego California. It’s an older style hotel property but it’s a terrific venue for a chiropractic event like the California Chiropractic Association conferences. I loved that you could park your car directly outside your room, beer cooler for the win!

Chiropractors Jeff Spencer, Dennis Buckley and Eric Plasker

Dr. Jeff Spencer (world renowned sports chiropractor) conducted a presentation on sports injuries and protocols to achieve maximum patient results. In Dr. Spencer’s presentation, he talked about controlling acute pain and inflammation by following an anti-inflammatory diet. He also talked about fibroblastic repair and remodeling, it was a great presentation.

Dr. Dennis Buckley (the former marathon running chiropractor in the center) practices in Pasadena California and is host to monthly chiropractic CORE events.

Dr. Eric Plasker (pictured on the right) presented on becoming the big idea. He is a motivating spirit and creator of the 100 Year Lifestyle, he has provided numerous 100 Year Lifestyle education programs for California Chiropractors.

Brian Wikoff Family Chiropractic

It’s terrific to catch up with local chiropractors when attending conferences. It’s also great to see chiropractors bring their family and staff to events like Parker Seminars. One chiropractor that brought his family and staff to the event was Dr. Brian Wikoff of Santa Ana, California. Brian and his wife Stacey have always been smiling and positive when I’ve seen them at events, I imagine their chiropractic office is loaded with nurturing energy.

Derrell Pratt Blackburn talks the TIC

Attendees on Friday were presented with a patient education talk by award-winning talk the tic finalist Derrell Pratt Blackburn titled Stuck in Traffic. His youthful enthusiasm for chiropractic reminded me of my days as a chiropractic student in Los Angeles, and the chiropractic minded friends I was surrounded by in those days.

Fabrizio Mancini and Gilles Lamarche of Parker University and Seminars

The last time I had the opportunity to photograph these two gentlemen they were featured in a Las Vegas fashion show during a Parker Las Vegas event. Chiropractors Fabrizio Mancini and Gilles Lamarche make all attendees feel welcome at Parker events, and it’s much appreciated, as the feeling of hospitality keeps chiropractors returning. Dr. Mancini has a new book out titled The Power of Self-Healing and I hear he remained an additional day in San Diego to go on Fox television to talk more about his book.

Brandi MacDonald Chiropractic Assistant Extraordinaire

Chiropractic assistant Brandi MacDonald (2010 chiropractic assistant of the year) did a presentation on the secrets of removing quality interference from the front desk and increasing your healing consciousness. She spoke about removing subluxation and interference from the perspective of a chiropractic assistant. Her talk is a must attend for chiropractic doctors and staff. Next time you are attending a Parker Seminar, don’t miss her presentations.

Get the Big Idea 468×60 Banner

A 468×60 banner for “the big idea” chiropractic VHS tape. Most of the ads that ran on the network were of this size. While today it’s common for chiropractic coaching and marketing companies to run banner ads, it was a cutting edge practice in the late 1990s.

Planet Chiropractic Audio Online

Something else that was considered cutting edge in the 1990s was streaming audio and video over the Internet. Nearly all the audio was free, but chiropractors could also order CDs (and even cassette tapes) of talks by their favorite chiropractors like James Sigafoose and Reggie Gold.

Dynamic Essentials Chiropractic Seminars

Dynamic Essentials (mostly held in the states of Georgia and Florida) was one of the first conference series purchasing banner advertisements on the Planet Chiropractic advertising network. Many doctors of chiropractic used the term “DE” when referring to Dynamic Essentials seminars. There are still DE events taking place today, but they are not the size that they were in the late 1990s. At that time, Dynamic Essentials was the biggest thing in chiropractic.

Sigafoose Audio Content

Undeniably the most popular audio being downloaded from Planet Chiropractic in the late 1990s featured James Sigafoose, a regular speaker at Parker Seminars, and many other chiropractic events. I once traveled from Los Angeles to a rural town in Pennsylvania to record a patient education talk put on by Sigafoose. I have that talk converted to MP3 format and should get posted here, I will look around for it.

468×60 trick-or-treat banner advertisement

Remember animated gif files? The banner ad for chiropractic tattoos shown above is a good example of themed animated banner advertisements we ran in those early days. There was a time when nearly every site had animated banner ads, nowadays most of those advertisements are delivered via flash.

Schofield Chiropractic Training

Another popular advertiser beginning around 2002 was Schofield Chiropractic Training with Susan and Dr. Fred Schofield. Monthly seminars for Schofield Chiropractic Training can still be viewed today on the chiropractic seminar pages. Perhaps one day we will see the return of an internal advertising network on Planet Chiropractic, but these days it’s easier to utilize third-party applications. Parker Seminars has joined up with the California Chiropractic Association for a seminar taking place in San Diego California on May 4-6, 2012. The 2012 CCA Annual Convention and Exposition is taking place at the Paradise Point Resort and Spa in San Diego, California. I’ve been to this resort property before (for another CCA summer convention) and it’s a great hotel property for a chiropractic conference. Very relaxing place and perfect hotel if you’re bringing along family.

Hip Relation to Low Back and Knee Pain – Diagnosis and Treatment

When we see a patient, we want to first and foremost address our patient’s need. What many practitioners forget that their practice is a business and they must educate their clients about how their practice is run. Having a good bedside manner is also important; however educating a patient about what to expect in your office is learnable. Even if you do not receive high marks on your bedside manner you can make points for making your patient feel at easy when they come in to see you. Longitudinal Spinal Organization with Segmental Dominance in Chinese Needle Therapy

The concept of acupuncture point selection has a rational and physiological basis which the Chinese discovered and refined thousands of years ago. Point selection is based on the longitudinal organization with segmental dominance within the body make-up. Using this traditional selection approach, you will be guided to the acupuncture points to use for both internal medicine and musculoskeletal dysfunction and pathology.

Patient Care and Practice Survival Depends on Smart Practice Business Choices

The importance of having a fair and reasonable contract and knowing the leasing process is stacked in the Landlord’s favor will make a difference in making smart business choices when selecting a place to build a practice. These choices will determine if you will have a profitable practice or one that is doomed for closure; taking your healing skills out of the market. Landlords have great contracts prepared by expensive real estate attorneys who place lopsided terms in their favor. This course will show you how to pick the right leasing broker to make the right choice and protect your interest allowing your practice to grow. Creative leasing ideas will be presented that help you in the short and long run. Topics discussed include options to terminate, options to renew, caps on landlord expenses, buy the building instead of renting, etc.

Entrapment Syndrome: Diagnosis and Treatment

Nerves in the body risk entrapment, compression, damage and impairment while passing through bony, fibrous, osteofibrosis and fibromuscular tunnels. This course will review common entrapments found in practice, the causes and treatment options for each.

Make the Diagnosis – It’s Not Difficult

This course will remove the mystery of arriving at an ICD-9 diagnosis. Each diagnosis has specific elements that need to be met to ‘make the diagnosis’. Bambie Cheney, L.Ac. majored in recreational education with handicapped children while attending Brigham Young University. Brianna Cheney, LMT is a graduate of Touch Therapy Institute and has been practicing as a massage therapist for over 7 years. She provides the art of massage at the California Health Institute. She is expanding her clinical skills by attending Southern California University of Health Sciences where she is enrolled in both the acupuncture and chiropractic programs.

Gina Hamilton, DC graduated from the Southern California University of Health Sciences (SCUHS) in December, 2010 with her Doctorate in Chiropractic. She is currently a part-time faculty member at SCUHS in the Chiropractic Procedures Department. She also works as a teaching assistant for 3 courses and a research assistant for 2 research studies. She is currently completing her third year as a student of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine at SCUHS. In April 2010, she spent 2 weeks in the Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine departments of Taoyuan Chang Gung Hospital in Taiwan observing integrative medicine in a hospital setting.

Jiling Hu, L.Ac., a native of Hu Bei province in China, received her medical degree at Hubei University of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) in Central China. She completed her residency at Hubei University of Traditional Chinese Medicine affiliated Hospital where she focused her training in Gynecology and Internal Medicine. Soon after finishing her residency, Ms. Hu entered graduate school at the prestigious Beijing University of TeM and the world-renowned Dong Zhi Men Hospital. She received a master degree in endocrinology and immunological disorders which integrated TCM and western medicine. After completing her graduate studies, she was soon promoted to attending TCM physician at the distinguished China Japan Friendship Hospital in Beijing. During her tenure there Ms. Hu treated a large number of patients, taught medical students, and wrote a number of medical papers on diabetes, thyroid disorders, menopause, and arthritis.

Donald (Deke) Kendall, L.Ac. has been an acupuncturist since 1981 with a Doctor of Oriental Medicine Degree from California Acupuncture College. He was the first President of the California Acupuncture Alliance. He is the author of the Dao of Chinese Medicine: Understanding an Ancient Healing Art, which is based on the author’s original translations of the Huangdi Neijing and a physiological understanding of the ancient Chinese concepts. He has extensive clinical experience and discovered the ancient Chinese understanding of the musculoskeletal system for consistency in treating pain and other musculoskeletal problems. He has successfully applied acupuncture to induce analgesia for four different surgeries including liposuction.

David Massie is a former pro beach volleyball player who has over 25 years of experience in representing owners and tenants. He has completed over 600 lease transactions and numerous purchases and sales for clients in office, medical, dental, retail and industrial projects varying in size from 500 to 300,000 square feet. He is a proven and experienced negotiator with an excellent understanding of legal terms in commercial leases and other real estate contracts. Dr. Kevin P. McNamee, DC, L.Ac. is the founder and president of The Supply Center which distributes Oriental medical supplies throughout the United States. A frequently sought after speaker, Dr. McNamee has lectured about Oriental medicine to television, radio, newspapers and University audiences. He is in full time practice in Los Angeles where he combines acupuncture, Oriental medicine and chiropractic in his patient’s care. Dr. McNamee is a consultant to several insurance companies, and an expert witness. He frequently publishes in Acupuncture Today.

Kevin Uchida, L.Ac. has practiced acupuncture on the Westside for the last decade with the motto: Traditional Relief for the Modern Masses. Believing that the future of Oriental Medicine is greater integration into the mainstream of American healthcare, he established his office in a family practice medical group and grew a referral based practice among the medical community in the Westside and South Bay areas. Dr. Uchida has a diverse background in both Western science and Oriental medicine, having earned a bachelors degree in Microbiology and Immunology at U.C. Berkeley, a Masters in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine at Samra University and a Doctorate of Oriental Medicine at South Baylo University. His prior work history includes basic research in the Genetics Department at U.C. Berkeley and missionary service in Japan with the United Methodist Church. His life experience in both the sciences and social service provide him with a unique perspective on patient care that combines compassionate bedside manner with effective, evidence based treatment strategies.

Dr. David Wells, DC, L.Ac. has been in practice since 1979. He is licensed as both a chiropractor an acupuncturist. He has degrees in psychology and nutrition. Dr. Wells also has postgraduate training in radiology, Applied Kinesiology, McKenzie rehabilitation exercise, etc. Dr. Wells has served as President of the California Acupuncture Association and the Council of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine Associations. He helped to pass laws favorable to consumers and acupuncture providers. He has presented to the NIH and the FDA regarding acupuncture needles and herbal medicines. Dr. Wells has presented to the AMA, many insurance companies, medical groups, hospitals, and health care conventions around the country.

Dr. Michael Wells, DC is a licensed chiropractor who is currently studying acupuncture at Yo San. His real education started much earlier, growing up in a household with two DCs and an LAc. He has also studied several martial arts with an eye toward using their principles for healing. He has participated in experimental research on the biomechanics of throwing. His current practice empowers patients through exercise and education. He has lectured to acupuncturists and dentists on anatomy, biomechanics, exercise, orthopedics and physiology.

With her left foot touching the finish line, Misiker Mekonnin takes 2nd place in the women’s division at the 2012 LA Marathon. Originally from Ethiopia, and currently living in Albuquerque New Mexico, Misiker Mekonnin completed the race with a time of 02:28:09 (2 hours 28 minutes and 9 seconds).

The first place finish in the women’s division was completed by Fatuma Sado of Ethiopia. In her 4th marathon event, 20-year-old Fatuma Sado busted through the tape at the finish line at 02:25:39. Fatuma shaved two minutes off of her previous personal best record, and ran fast enough to not only win the women’s division, but the $100,000 gender bonus as well.

After breaking the orange tape, Fatuma Sado gestured in prayer and kneeled to her knees, kissing the asphalt of Ocean Avenue in Santa Monica, California. The 2012 gender challenge handicap was 17 minutes and 31 seconds. Elite marathon runners from the male division battled to overcome the time handicap.

Simon Njoroge was not far behind, but his time wasn’t fast enough to win this year’s race overall. Simon did win the men’s division, which included a $25,000 prize and a 2012 Honda CR-V (MSRP around $30,000). At 31 years of age, Simon Njoroge shows us that it’s not always the youngest runners that win the race.

The rain was not falling like it did during the 2011 LA Marathon, but the coastal winds were beginning to pick up. Several elite runners later told me they felt increasing winds negatively affected their pace during the final few miles.

Wearing Bib F4, 23-year-old Yeshimebet Tadesse of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia finished 3rd in the women’s division. Her 2012 LA Marathon time was 02:30:46. Her facial expression shows a look of discomfort as she walks beyond the finish line photography rigging. With an average pace of 05:45:10 per mile, for 26.2 miles, the look does not at all come as a surprise. In 2011, Amy Hastings of Mammoth Lakes had a similar look seconds after she crossed the finish line.

2nd place in the men’s division went to Weldon Kirui of Kericho, Kenya. The 23-year-old distance runner from the highlands of Kenya finished the 2012 LA Marathon with a time of 02:13:40 (2 hours 13 minutes 40 seconds). In 2011, Weldon Kirui was first across the finish line in the San Diego America’s Finest City Half Marathon.

Stephen Muange of Ngong, Kenya maintains his stride as he crosses the finish line in Santa Monica. The 30-year-old distance runner was a 4th place finisher in the men’s division for the 2012 Honda LA Marathon. His recorded time was 02:15:35. Stephen Muange was one of the few elite runners that I noticed not wearing a timing device on their wrist.

6th place in the men’s division went to David Mandago of Kapsabet, Kenya. David Mandago Kipkorir completed the LA Marathon with a time of 02:18:43. At 33 years of age, he has a history of top finishing running accomplishments. His personal best time to date is 02:06:53 in the 2009 Paris Marathon.

With both feet in the air, Hailu Seifu of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia glides across the finish line and through the crosswalk intersection of California Street and Ocean Avenue. 25-year-old Hailu Seifu completed the 2012 LA Marathon in 2 hours 17 minutes and 49 seconds. It was fast enough for a fifth-place finish.

Wearing running bib number 5, Dereje Yadete made a 7th place finish in the 2012 LA Marathon. Dereje Yadete completed the marathon with a time of 02:19:16. The Nike sponsored Ethiopian distance runner specializes in half marathon and marathon distances. In the 2010 Istanbul-Eurasia Marathon, Dereje debuted with a 2nd place finish time of 02:11:53.

Salomie Getnet finished the 2012 LA Marathon in 6th place in the women’s division. Finishing 2nd in P.F. Chang’s 2009 Rock ‘n’ Roll Arizona Marathon, Salomie Getnet remains a serious marathon contender. Her posted finish time for the 2012 LA Marathon was 02:41:50.

Wearing a Bucks County Running Company running shirt and a bandaid across his nose, 28 year old Jeffrey McCabe (from Pennsylvania) finished the race with a clock time of 02:29:22.

Jeffrey McCabe can be seen stopping the timer on his left wrist as he crosses the finish line. Most of the elite runners wore a timekeeping device on their left wrist. Jeffrey McCabe’s finish time was fast enough to put him on the top 10 leaderboard for male finishers in the 2012 race.

In a yellow Adidas running shirt, and a cap featuring the colors of Mexico, Tlaloc Venancio Mancilla points a finger in the air as he crosses the finish line during the 2012 LA Marathon. Living in Flagstaff Arizona, Tlaloc Venancio Mancilla completed the 26.2 mile course with a time of 02:30:55. On January 29, Tlaloc Venancio Mancilla won 2nd place in the men’s division of the 2012 3M Half Marathon.

A local from Palmdale California, Justin Patananan (wearing bib number nine) ran the 2012 LA Marathon with a finishing clock time of 02:13:49. Patananan maintained an average pace of 5:06 per mile for 26.2 miles, from inside Dodger Stadium to the corner of Ocean Avenue and California Street in Santa Monica. A graduate of UCLA, Justin Patananan was a 2008 USA Men’s Marathon Olympic Trials Qualifier and Participant.

Dressed in all black running gear and a pair of turquoise colored running shoes, Owen Kiely steps over the finish line at the 2012 LA Marathon. With an official clock time of 02:32:35 and marathon pace of 5:49 per mile, the 27-year-old Redondo Beach resident was another local Southern California to complete the marathon with an impressive time.

Wearing black sunglasses, black gloves, and a St. Patrick’s weekend green Mile High Track Club running shirt, Colorado resident Jonathan Garcia completes the 2012 Los Angeles Marathon with a clock time of 02:32:42. 30-year-old Jonathan Garcia is from Fort Collins Colorado, he finished an impressive 13th overall. When he’s not distance running, Jonathan Garcia works as an athletic coach at the Athletic Improvement Center in Colorado.

From Chicago Illinois, and running through the streets of Los Angeles, Adam Nevens (wearing Bib 18410 and a King’s Athletics running shirt) crossed the California Street finish line with a time of 2:33:41. Adam completed the 2009 New York Marathon with a 02:32:14 finish time and the 2009 Austin Marathon with a 02:33:48 finish time.

A 37-year-old elite marathon runner from Los Angeles California, Thaddeus Reichley crossed over the blue and red line at 02:33:45. Thaddeus was only 4 seconds behind Chicago’s Adam Nevens, an impressive finish. The local SoCal runner had a 02:36:07 2011 LA Marathon finish time, and a 02:40:51 2009 LA Marathon finish time (Wesley Korir won that race).

Ryo Ota from Inzai, Japan is the final finisher for the elite marathoners featured in this photo post. The 20-year-old Ryo Ota wore bib number 18513 and completed the race with a clock time of 02:33:51. At 20 years of age, Ryo has plenty of opportunity to improve on his personal best marathon running times.

The C.O.R.E. group drives home the idea that we are all connected to accomplish something great in a profession we love. It has been our hope since C.O.R.E. was launched in August 2003, that C.O.R.E. will be more than just a generic organization, rather a force for good, by bringing social conscious to social/professional networking while building a foundation toward becoming the premiere organization in chiropractic while working with established organizations within our profession.
