I had just finished installing a new plug-in that allowed us to incorporate audio and video podcast’s into these posts. I was searching around for some content that I may not have posted to the planet chiropractic web site in the past and I found a most fitting talk given by Ian Grassam in 1997 that was recorded in Orange County, California, and ICA convention.
I was a chiropractic student the year Dr. Grassam gave his talk. He delivered an inspirational message that became one of the motivating factors behind the creation of planet chiropractic, while I was still a chiropractic college student, in the 1990s.
Ian Grassam talks about getting oneself on purpose, health-care, sickness and disease, chiropractic philosophy, the failure of medicine, and having a reason for being. His presentation is over 50 minutes and it’s well worth listening to many times over.
Here is a brief text transcription of the first few minutes of Dr. Ian Grassam’s talk…
Something’s happening on the West Coast. There is a revolution in education on the West Coast. As we shared with the students at LACC and at Cleveland, you serve the administration, you serve the community, you serve your fellow students, you serve the patients in your clinics, you continue to serve and serve and serve and serve and serve. And pretty soon you are the master of your universe. Because if you ever choose to be master you must be servant to all. That is the price. The price is to give up yourself and realize what it is you are here for and what it is you’re trying to accomplish, and then change the world accordingly.
The students at the West Coast schools are making a major difference in their institutions. And it’s a love for this principle in chiropractic that has motivated them in that direction. They will benefit beyond all belief. Those students who at this time are serving those institutions, and their fellow students, will be the leaders that will take these meetings in the next 20 years and turn it into 10 and 15,000 people. That’s the leadership that is here today from the schools.
While I was converting the files over to MP3 format so I could upload them to the site, I came across the minutes from a chiropractic student meeting held days after Dr. Ian Grassam’s visit to Los Angeles. Information is included here for historical purposes only…

1It was great hearing my father. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you.
He was as much an inspiration to me as he was to our profession. I had never heard this before today. Is there anyway for me to download this?
Thank You,
John R. Grassam D.C.

2WOW! Ian sure had the ability to inspire, it was great to hear this. My family - wife and 2 children were patients for 4 years. Those were the best 4 years of our life. I remember coming into his office and telling him I couldn’t afford too much. He said what could you afford. 300 a month was my reply. Ian said fine and we saw him 2 to 3 times a week. Also anytime that someone didn’t feel well. Once my 3 year old son came down with a 105 degree fever. We rushed him to Ian who gave him an adjustment, let him sleep in his office and gave him two more adjustments over the course of the day. By 5 oclock my sons fever was gone and he was playing and laughing. My wife was set to go to the hospital with severe kidney pain and fever. Ian said come on down and of course she got well without going to hospital. I could go on and on. What I loved most was he inspired my whole family ever time we saw him. His ability to get to the crux of any upset was amazing. I have been working in my comfort zone lately and just listening to this inspires me to do more. I believe he was a mentor to most that he met and we sure do miss him. I went to a couple of chiropractors here in tampa and talked about Ian, my experiences with him, the chiropractic story, going frequently for maintenance and they looked at me like I was crazy as they handed me a $200.00 bill for my 5 minute adjustment. The world sure could use a few more like him and Dr. john don’t know his last name in Orlando Fl. John we loved your dad we are better people for knowing him. I remember you were going to school and how proud your dad was of you and your sister. All the best to you.
